Michelin Guide publishes list of the 21 best restaurants in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro

The traditional Michelin Guide announced the best Brazilian restaurants, in a choice that was restricted to two cities, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Six establishments were awarded two stars and another 15 received one star. No restaurant earned the top honor, three stars.

The last edition of the Guide with Brazilian restaurants was in 2020. Three establishments maintained their two stars, with another three newcomers. Seven other places continued with their single star, eight of which were newcomers.

Two star restaurants

DOM (São Paulo)

Chef Alex Atala's famous restaurant continues to please the palates of Michelin Guide evaluators. “The tasting menu (there is also a vegetarian option) is a journey through the flavors of the Amazon region, exploring riverside communities and almost unknown ingredients (priprioca root, heart of palm, ants, açaí, jambu, tucupi, etc.) from small local producers, in addition to offer surprising textures and flavors that will delight the palate – all prepared in a creative way and based, occasionally, on European-inspired combinations”, says part of the Guide text.

DOM is located at Rua Barão de Capanema 549, Jardins.

Evvai (São Paulo)

Evvai is a new restaurant this year in the Michelin Guide, located at Rua Joaquim Antunes, 108, in Pinheiros. And it won lots of praise from evaluators, who only spoke highly of chef Luiz Filipe Souza's inventions. “His innovative cuisine, a fusion of Brazilian and Italian influences, results in dishes that are not only visually attractive, but full of skill, knowledge and balance”, highlighted the Guide.

Tuju (São Paulo)

Tuju is another São Paulo restaurant included in the 2024 list. Chef Ivan Ralston opened the restaurant in 2014 and had already won Michelin stars in previous years, but had closed the restaurant in 2020 to dedicate himself to other projects. At the end of 2023, however, he reopened Tuju at Rua Frei Galvão, 135, Jardim Paulistano, and has quickly gained another star.

“Chef Ivan Ralston, well supported by a great team of cooks, is totally committed to gastronomy in a profound way, using his knowledge to combine seasonal Brazilian products and flavors (especially from São Paulo) with the most contemporary European techniques and always with a focus on creativity and research”, praises the Guide.

Lasai (Rio de Janeiro)

Lasai is the only Rio restaurant with two stars that debuted on the 2024 list (the other two were already in 2020). With only 10 seats in the room, it is a very exclusive place, with a difference: you watch the entire preparation of the menu prepared by chef Rafa Costa e Silva. Or, as the Michelin Guide says, “dining at this restaurant is like watching a show, but with the best seats in the house”.

The restaurant is located at Largo dos Leões 35, Humaitá.

Oro (Rio de Janeiro)

The Michelin Guide's description of the Oro restaurant, by chef Felipe Bronze and sommelier Cecilia Aldaz, is already a good invitation to pay it a visit: “One of those restaurants that every food lover should visit”.

Located at Avenida General San Martin, 889, Leblon, Oro is already well known in the Michelin Guide and among those who like to eat well. The Afetividade and Creativity menus (with two and four main dishes, respectively) pay homage to the different regions of Brazil. “What impressed us most was the creativity of the starters, including the superb oysters with jabuticaba, and the selection of snacks to eat with your hands, some crunchy, others Brazilian, and others inspired by Japanese cuisine”, says the Guide's evaluation.

Oteque (Rio de Janeiro)

The Michelin Guide not only highlights and praises the dishes served in restaurants, but also evaluates the service and space. And Otoque was described as a “temple of gastronomy in the city”. “Once you pass through the discreet facade, you can leave the hustle and bustle of everyday life behind in this high-ceilinged restaurant, where the ancient and the highly contemporary coexist. The main dining room has an industrial feel, with exposed brick walls and six large round tables, plus a dining counter at one end in front of the open kitchen.

Chef Alberto Landgrad's restaurant offers a unique surprise tasting menu that varies according to the seasons. It is located at Rua Conde de Irajá, 581, Botafogo.
