The 10 most expensive vacation destinations in the United States

When planning our vacation trip, we usually take a series of factors into consideration: the destination's attractions, the period, how many days to stay and, most importantly, the cost. After all, there's no point dreaming about an expensive destination if we can't pay for it. With this in mind, the travel website “Optimos Travel” carried out a survey of the 10 most expensive holiday destinations in the United States.

The 10 most expensive vacation destinations in the United States

The site analyzed more than 100 popular U.S. vacation destinations and collected the data based on four main criteria: the costs of meals, transportation, accommodations and attractions.

The research methodology was based on average meal and transportation costs from the Numbeo website; hotel prices searched on Booking.com; and average attraction costs based on Google's top recommendations.

The survey shows the daily costs of one person, but also the expenses for a week's vacation for a family of four. Check out the list below.

10 – Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Ranking #10 in the survey is Jackson Hole, Wyoming, which offers a mix of wilderness and luxury retreats. In total, a person's daily spending is US$490 per person (US$123 for meals, US$302 for accommodation, US$54 for attractions and US$10 for transportation).

According to the survey, a person will spend US$3,427.67 in one week – or US$8,612.3 if it is a family of four. The region is well known for its nature and for being home to one of the most famous national parks in the United States, the Yellowstone Lower Loop (if you wish, book this tour here).

9 – Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts

Traveling to Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, is only slightly more expensive than the previous destination: it costs US$496.65 per day for an individual traveler. A week's vacation comes to $3,495 for one person or $8,130 for a family of four.

This quiet island on the northeast coast of the United States receives many local tourists, but you need money to travel there. The most expensive thing is accommodation, with an average daily rate of US$364.38.

8 – New York

Anyone who has been to New York knows how expensive the city is. Of course you can try to save as much as possible, but according to research the daily cost for one person is 511.34. A solo traveler will thus spend US$3,582 per week, while a family would spend US$8,808.

According to the website, the average meal is US$142.50 (I thought it was quite exaggerated), the hotel is US$323 and the attractions are US$40.

7 – Charleston, South Carolina

Charleston, South Carolina, is a port city with beautiful historic architecture and also known for its great cuisine, receiving tourists from the United States and other countries all year round. And it came in 7th place in the ranking with a daily expense of US$535.68 per person, US$120 for meals and US$387 for accommodation. A family of four would spend $8,735 during the week.

6 – Key West, Florida

Key West is south of Florida, about 4 hours away. Miami. The island known for its bustling nightlife, coral reefs and activities like snorkeling has its price: $421.67 per day per person or $8,399 for a family of four for a week-long vacation. Anyone who dreams of visiting Key West will need to prepare their pockets.

5 – Santa Monica, California

California is always a very popular destination for tourists, and it is in Santa Monica, next to Los Angeles, which is home to the famous Pacific Park amusement park. There, travelers can enjoy the beach and the urban center, but be aware of the prices they will pay: US$114 for food and US$446 for a hotel, accounting for a daily expense of US$592.05 per person – or US$9,539 for a family trip for a week.

4 – Montauk, New York

Montauk, in New York state, stands out for its coastal charm, coming in fourth on the list with a daily cost of US$613.77 per person. Despite having one of the lowest attraction fees ($7.67), the city has the highest meal expenses ($135). Accommodation costs US$464.22.

3 – Maui, Hawaii

Hawaii is the dream destination for many travelers, especially those who like beaches, nature, beautiful landscapes and surfing. But be aware that traveling to the island of Maui is not cheap at all and, according to the survey, you need to be prepared for a daily expense of US$681.74 per person, the most expensive being the hotel (US$534). The individual expense for a week is US$4,762 or US$10,782 for a family of four.

2 – Park City, Utah

Park City, Utah, is a famous North American snow destination, but it welcomes tourists in both winter and summer. In addition to skiing and other snow sports, travelers also enjoy hiking and boat trips. With large resorts in the region, the cost of accommodation is US$471.00 per night.

A week in this paradise costs US$4,971 for one person; a family of four can expect to spend US$12,632 during the period.

1 – Aspen, Colorado

Aspen is probably one of the most famous snow destinations in the world, a sanctuary for skiers and snowboarders. But if you're planning to go to Colorado for a vacation, prepare your pockets: the daily cost is US$761.39 per person.

It really is far from cheap, but we know that a winter ski destination is usually expensive. For a family of four, this weekly trip will cost US$13,691.
